about

Well, this took long enough.

FM Transmitter got started with the initial work on Villa Seattle back in October 2019, if my memory serves me right. So this album has taken pretty much exactly 2 years, which wasn't necessarily the plan. When I released Villa Seattle in early 2020, the idea was that the album it's on would come out later that same year. Obviously some notable issues came up in the world since then, which hampered how often I could record, so the album was completed much later than expected.

Thankfully, this also meant I could spend a lot of time honing the more technical aspects of the album. That doesn't mean you should expect anything really "professional" sounding on FM Transmitter, but the production is hopefully no longer DIY to a point of being an active fault.

I also realize now that I've almost entirely been describing the literal aspects of the album more than anything conceptual or inspired, which is probably not a great way to start talking about a long-awaited debut record. The truth is that I want the songs to speak for themselves, as cliche and pretentious as that is. While every Tulpa release so far was meant to be a sort of "statement" establishing the project's importance (to me at least), this is hopefully going to go down as the true beginning of Tulpa, if that makes any sense.

Almost everything on this album was written with the intention of being something of a "grand entrance" for the band. On a conceptual level, almost every lyric or composition is meant to essentially be a manic explosion of "Look at me! I did it! I made a song! I made an album! I'm loud! Listen to me!" and the pride that comes with that. Looking back, this is honestly a really egotistical project, but I think that writing in that way has been really good for me in coming to accept myself as an artist. The intricacies of that theme are weaved through the album, but more than anything I want the songs to express something powerful, and of course, enjoyable.

Thank you to every one of my friends who took the time out of their day to give me advice and opinions on my work, thank you to my Mom and Dad for their constant belief in the project and their willingness to let me express myself, and thank you all for listening. I hope you enjoy Tulpa's debut album, and everything that's to come in the future.
