about

First of all, you may have noticed the artist title on this release of "TULPA source". Whenever I have a random idea for a small side project that I want to release that really can't be considered part of TULPA's "canon" discography of rock music and actual songwriting, I'm going to put a suffix after the band name. This is mainly just for the sake of organization, and also slightly due to how much I like the cryptic aesthetic of having multiple band names. Hopefully that isn't too pretentious or hard to understand.

As that implies, this is a side-project I've been casually working on. It's a collection of mostly improvised ambient tracks based on random locations on Earth. The exact process was that I would go into Google Earth, literally close my eyes, spin the map, and zoom into a random place, and then use specific imagery from the area as a tool to improvise ambient sounds on my keyboard. Then I attempted to polish whatever was written in that moment with surrounding bits of production.

As for why I made this, it's largely out of a personal hyperfixation I have with more "obscure" locations on Earth. I'm easily impressed by the scope of the world around me, and how much I will never begin to understand every bit of history and purpose in every small thing. I think it's easy to limit our view of the world around us to the most obviously important things, and not realize how much meaning could be hidden somewhere you've never even considered. So, this release is largely an attempt to channel that feeling of discovery.

I'm aware that "everything has a story" is not a revolutionary concept at all. However, I think there's a large difference between the passing knowledge of that idea, and actually feeling that level of depth in the world around you. I'm also aware that it might look pretty silly (at best) of somebody as western and suburban as me to attempt to capture something this huge. I can't help but feel like a naive tourist in creating this, so this release is also somewhat of an invitation for people far, far more justified than me to explore this concept - both in their experience of the world around them, or just in their actual aptitude around a MIDI keyboard.
